Picky eaters beware! If you have a child, significant other
or household full of picky eaters this maybe the solution to your picky eating
situation.
Through extensive research (tested
on my own picky eating family) I have discovered that picky eaters will test the “food waters”
but with limits. One such limit is they need to be in control of their plate.
In control as in they want to divvy up the portions, the selections and the
“look”all on their own. This can be achieved with creating meals that consist of a core food
(example: pasta) with several side dishes your picky eater can add to the core
meal (example: sautéed veggies, cheese, shredded chicken). Think restaurant salad bar in your kitchen!
There are a lot of “core meal” options that families can
leverage at meal time that can satisfy the picky eater and allow them to feel
in more control of the meal process. My favorite “core meal” options are:
- Potato Bar
- Pizza
- Pasta
- Salad
- Sandwiches
- Risotto
Side Bowl Add-ons:
- Sautéed veggies
- Raw veggies
- Cheese
- Shredded chicken, beef or seafood
- Tofu
- Raisins, craisins, nuts or coconut
Additionally I have found that with picky eaters it helps:
- To setting some ground rules that your picky eater must follow, as in “you must take a portion from each bowl”.
- Allow your picky eater to help with the set-up of the meal, this will allow them to be vested in the process.
- Ask them to help plan the meals.
The process to convert a picky eater to a "normal" one takes time ...maybe a lifetime. So be patient.
