Who am I to judge
who has the best ice cream in the state of Massachusetts but I humbly will take
on this challenge. I will start with the top five in the state but will promise
to taste my way through an expanded list (as I expand my pants size)!
Here we
go (in no particular order) …
- Cape Cod Creamery Hyannis
You will be guaranteed to wait in a line but it is worth the large size gourmet ice cream. As a cute side - all of the hand-made offerings are named for nearby towns. It is a rite of passage for anyone visiting the cape in the summer. - Kimball FarmWestford
Given “birth” to in 1939, Kimball’s ice cream is legendary in this area. The portions are a meal in and of themselves. To boot the selection of flavors is upward of 50. You are sure to find what your ice cream heart desires. - HerrellNorthampton
Herrell was the first to mix name-brand candies into ice cream (think Butterfingers, Heath Bar, etc). Over 340 flavors have been created through the years including some pretty funky ones like JalapeƱo. - Dr. DavisPepperell
It was veterinarian Dr. “Doc” Davis who started Dr. Davis in 1939. The hand-made ice cream is amazing in taste as well as the flavor selection, which changes every couple of weeks. The taste and flavors are only rivaled by the humongous size of the cones. Trust me order a kiddie cone and you will be content. - ToscaniniCambridge
I still have dreams about a hazelnut ice cream sundae I had at Toscanini some 15 years ago. Needless to say this ice cream rocks. The New York Times even thinks so siting Toscanini as “The World’s Best Ice Cream”. Toscanini is located in Central square and creates all of its ice cream in-house. Costly, sizes not as large as in the “country” but totally worth it for taste.
