Lincoln Massachusetts is a fantastic destination but not one
that is top of mind. Located 13 miles west
of Boston, Lincoln has many claims to fame…The only town in the US named for Lincolnshire, England (fun
but obscure fact), site of the capture of Paul Revere on the night of his
famous ride and hot-spot for the transcendental movement. But to me Lincoln is
just an amazingly pretty place with an odd amount of fun things to do for such
a small town. Here is a sampling to be explored further…
House Tours:
If you are
into touring homes then Lincoln has you covered. Houses from two very different
time periods can be viewed.
- Gropius House built
in 1938 by German architect Walter Gropius. It is a postmodern home
designed and lived in by the architect and designer himself. Gropius House : https://www.historicnewengland.org/property/gropius-house/
- The Codman Estate
has seen five generations of family members living in the mansion since 1740.
The Georgian
house is surrounded by beautiful grounds and gardens.Codman Estate : https://www.historicnewengland.org/property/codman-estate/
Farms
Lincoln has two great farms to visit; Drumlin Wildlife
Sanctuary and the Codman Community Farm.
- Drumlin Wildlife Sanctuary is part of
the Massachusetts Audubon Society and is a wildlife sanctuary as well as a working
farm. There are camps, tours and great workshops offered.
Drumlin Wildlife Sanctuary : https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/drumlin-farm - The Codman
Community farm was started in the 1970s as a non-profit agricultural community
farm. Volunteers make up the “workers” that grow and tend to the livestock.
There is a small store that works on the honor system and offers a great array
of locally grown foods.

Museums:
deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. This an amazing museum focused on modern art. Located on 35 acres, the museum offers great trails, a sculpture garden and a museum complete with a library, kids room café and rooftop art.

Oddity
Lincoln even has its own Atlas Obsura mention! Follow Rt117
west on Old Sudbury Rd and you will come across a strange display of old
plastic and metal toy horses. It is a mystery as to how these horses found
their way to this location or who continually re-positions them but they are
oddly a wonderful site to behold.
