A confession …I love Somerville. There is something about
this city that is kind of edgy, kind of on the verge, kind of artsy but also
kind of stuck in another era. Although defined as a city, Somerville has more of
a large town vibe to it. Ironically it is sited as being the most densely
populated municipalities in New England as well as ranking the 16th
in the country.
Located to the Northwest of Boston, Somerville boasts many
fun things to do including a nostalgic cartoon book store, an amazing deli with
fresh baked bread, a chocolate factory tour (later post), the Museum of Bad Art
and the best ribs place in Massachusetts.
- Start your Somerville day trip with a poke around Comicazi,Cartoon Store located at
407 Highland
Ave. This store is a comic book lover’s heaven but additionally the store caters
to anyone who loves old television shows, games and toys.
- Right across the street from Comicazi,Cartoon is a fun deli called Pepe Bocca. The deli has tons
of breads and cheeses with fun pastas and sauces. This is an option to get a
great sandwich but I beg you to not - save your appetite for Redbones.
- Next stop is at the Museum of Bad Art. Located at the Somerville Theater,
this “museum” is basically a hallway in the basement of the theater but like no
other hallway you have ever seen. Horrible horrible art! It is a real treat.
- And now ….drumroll…my favorite Somerville attraction! Of course this attraction would have to do with food but oh what food! Hands down I would say the best ribs in the Boston area, in Massachusetts, in the world! Hosed in an Art Deco building tucked away down a side street you will find Redbones. You know you are there when you turn and see a crowd waiting outside. Yes it gets busy but it is worth the wait. Redbone has delectable slow cooked ribs in every make, model and size. To boot they offer up classic side dishes and sauces from mild to burning. After you consume your warm corn bread, Mason jar full of lemonade and delicious meal, treat yourself to some pecan pie with homemade whip cream…my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
