For anyone who has an interest in the ocean, the creatures
that inhabit the sea or even the mysteries of sunken ships - do I have a place
for you! The impressively imposing name is the Ocean Science Exhibit Center at
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Founded in 1930, The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
(WHOI) is a non-profit organization focused on ocean research and education.
Through exploration the WHOI has become a world leader on the impact of the
ocean on our planet. The Ocean Science Exhibit Center serves as a showcase for
WHOI’s discoveries, research projects and tools used in these endeavors. It
also allows the public to become engaged and hopefully enchanted with the
exploration of the sea and most importantly the preservation of the sea.
The Ocean Science Exhibit Center at Woods Hole is not large
but it packs a punch. There are numerous videos providing a great introduction
to the valuable work the WHOI does as well as general sea life information.
There is a full-size replica of the Alvin – the deep submersible used to
discover the Titanic and an exhibit on the Titanic. Additional exhibits include
the natural flow and process the sea takes as well as life forms within the
deepest part of the ocean.
After your visit you can walk around WHOI and take in the beautiful ocean views. The town of Woods Hole is
also a treat to take a peek at and maybe stop for a meal.
