A small farm
zoo, a pond with ducks, more trails than you
can count, and ice cream to boot! Great Brook Farm State Park is a dream come
true for the young, young at heart or any outdoor enthusiast.
Located in
Carlisle on 1,000 acres of woodlands, Great Brook’s has a long New England history. Dating back to the Native American Indians who used sections of Great
Brook as sacred sites. In the seventeenth century several mills were
located on the site as well as numerous farms. It is Great Brook’s agricultural history that is focused on and embraced
today.
The Park employees a
full time farmer, and operates a year-round dairy farm. Ice cream made from the
milk produced at Great Brook is served up from May to October complements of
the 60 odd Holstein cows in residence. Enjoy a cone while watching the cows
through the glass wall that looks into the barn. Free guided barn tours are
available on Saturdays and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
If farm animals and
ice cream take a back seat to the great outdoors have no fear. With over 20
miles of trails available for walkers, hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback
riders families will have an endless supply of options to explore. Some trials
even identify Native American sites. The park contains much
for families to enjoy including fields, forests, several ponds and a swamp.
