Visiting an art museum is not everyone’s idea of a fun outing. Be it your spouse, your children or even yourself an art museum may not seem worth the effort but have no fear there are ways to have fun with the experience and maybe even expand your cultural horizons!
- Know thy Museum
Make sure you check out the museums web site to see what exhibits are showing and what (if any) events might be taking place. - Take a Walk with an Expert
Many times artist or curators will be giving talks on the art. These talks can be surprisingly fun, interesting and really can pull you into the art experience. - Take a Walk with an Electronic Device
Most museums have self guilded tours - with the use of your phone or their gadgets you can move from piece to piece getting a great perspective and history of what is on view. - Plan on Lunch
I am big on food and support any and all food consumption especially to liven up an activity. Most art museums have wonderful cafes or restaurants. If food is not your “thing” (who are you?) then plan to take a tea or coffee break. - Gifts at the Gift Store
Nine times out of ten an art museum store will have some of the best merchandise in existence. Buy a treat for yourself or just have fun walking around. - Play a Game
This trick works for both adults and kids alike…play a game. Some fun ones I have used are:
Selecting a painting and …
- Make up a story about the people in the piece
- Play“I Spy”
- Art museum Scavenger Hunt. Make a list of items that everyone needs to find in the art work. - Don't Stay Longer than you Want
Many times people stay longer than they should at a museum. There is no timetable and if you and yours feel like doing a quick run through the museum go for it. Look at the art that really interests you and then move on.
