Thoughts may be drifting to “back to school time” but cool your jets there is still plenty of time for some great family day trips. Purgatory Chasm State Reservation will totally fit the bill for a great family or friend day adventure.
Purgatory Chasm State
Reservation is one of Massachusetts' most impressive natural landmarks. The
park is located in Sutton, Mass and is comprised of walking, hiking and
climbing trails, but hands down, the highlight of the visit is the chasm
itself.
The rocky gorge is believed
to have been created by a sudden release of dammed-up glacial water some 14,000
years ago. "Chasm Loop Trail" -- which takes you through the chasm --
twists and turns its way through a maze of sizable rock formations and proves a
dream come true for those that love to climb. The half-mile hike is sandwiched
between granite and bedrock walls that at some points rise as high as 70 feet. Additionally
the state reservation has five other trails.
Things to know and helpful hints:
- The reservation is open daily, sunrise to sunset, year-round
- There is a fee to park
- No food is sold at the park, but the reservation includes picnic areas with grills and has plenty of great spots for a picnic lunch or snack.
- Make sure everyone in your family dresses appropriately, which includes wearing shoes with a good tread.
- Apply sunscreen and insect repellant, and remember to bring plenty of water.
