TIPS & TRICKS: TOP 5 PLACES TO SLED IN MASSACHUSETTS

Some families are ski families, some skating and still others cross country families. We are none of the above. We are a …well...sledding family.

This sledding thing actually stems from me. I love a good hill to sled on, the snow wiping on my face,  the scary exciting feeling as  I go down the hill. Now the hike up the hill I like not so much but the trip down is wonderful!

I know it is not as glamorous as skiing, skating or even cross country but it is my chosen winter “sport”.  And by reason of association, my family has been forced to partake in this winter pastime.

Here are my top picks for sledding hills in Massachusetts– to be added to as the season progresses!

Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain
The Arnold Arboretum is known for its amazing gardens and trees. But those gardens and trees are on lovely rolling hills which come winter time are just where you want to be. The views are amazing with terrific city skyline vistas. Peter’s Hill is the most popular because of the sparse placement of trees.

Lexington High School, Lexington
This sledding location has a couple things going for it…several pretty good hills located right behind the school, plenty of parking and an adorable town to swing into after sledding for some hot chocolate.

Wellesley College, Wellesley
As with the Lexington High Schools hills, Wellesley College has a great offering as well.  In the case of Wellesley College the hill to seek is near Severance Hall.  Like Lexington High there is parking (look for visitor signs) and an adorable little town to stop for a nice hot drink after your sledding adventure.

Boston Common, Boston
Boston Common not only has a great skating area but additionally has a terrific hill where the Soldiers & Sailors Monument is located.

Benjamin Hill Park, Shirley
This one is a favorite but may not be your cup of tea if you get scared of heights. Benjamin Hill Park was at one point a ski slope and it is not for the fate of heart. I will be honest my first time down I was scared but it was worth it…the trip up is a workout.
