At this time of year I would venture to say that you have at
least one Norman Rockwell Christmas image floating around your head. For many
of us this American artist defined the look of the holiday, be it Santa himself
(via Coke Cola ads) or iconic images of families celebrating or readying
themselves for the Christmas celebrations. Perhaps Rockwell’s famous depiction
of his hometown of Stockbridge is the image stuck in your mind. In many ways
this image is the quintessential Christmas image depicting a small town in
winter with the town’s people rushing in and out of stores on the town’s main
street. Stockbridge to this day looks exactly as it did in the painting –
perfectly preserved and wonderfully Christmas-y.
Annually a weekend-long celebration is put on by the town of
Stockbridge honoring Rockwell and his iconic Christmas depiction of Main Street. Typically
held the first week-end in December “Main
Street at Christmas” is a fantastic
event to kick off the holiday season. Stockbridge has covered all the bases including caroling, horse drawn carriage
rides, holiday concerts, house tours, readings, food, hot cocoa and of course a
visit from Santa. The culmination of “Main
Street at Christmas” happens on Sunday afternoon with a re-creation
of Rockwell’s painting, complete with period automobiles.
A visit to Stockbridge would not be complete without a meal
at the Red Lion Inn. Book your reservation well in advance as seating is at a
premium this week-end.
