DAY TRIP: MINUTE MAN NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK

One of the best things about Massachusetts is the incredible historical sites it has to offer. Possibly the most famous in Massachusetts (and United States for that matter) is the Minute Man National Historic Park - site of the beginning of the American Revolution.

The approximately 900 acre park encompasses three towns (Lexington, Lincoln and Concord). With an increase in spring and summer events, now may prove a perfect time to load the car up with the family bikes or stroller and make a fun day trip of it.

Depending on where your interests lie the park has much to offer, either as a historical trip or just a pleasant outdoor retreat. The Park consists of a Visitor Center, a small museum and several trails. Most of the trails are well suited for bikers and walkers, dogs are allowed as well.
The main trail is the “Battle Road Trail” and it is a perfect 5 mile path that weaves in and out tracing the battle that began the American Revolution. Visitor will want to start the walk at the Visitor Center and watch the award winning, multi-media show "The Road to Revolution". The theater program runs daily every 30 minutes and gives a surprisingly interesting overview of the historic events of April 19, 1775.

Once on the trail, families will find themselves meandering through sections of well-preserved woods with authentic period buildings.  During the spring/ summer season many buildings are open to the public for tours or other events such as musket firing demonstrations.  The “Battle Road Trail” ends at the old North Bridge, site of “the shot heard ‘round the world.”

And if hungry then Concord Center has it covered. Everything from sandwiches and salads to wine, cheese and ice cream!
