DAY TRIP: FREE JAZZ & BLUES CONCERTS IN BOSTON

Hands down the free musical concerts in Boston have been my best summer discovery to date. We stumbled upon this delightful offering by chance one late summers evening and free concerts have now become a tradition for our family. We have found Thursday nights to be the best nights to make this outing, both Jazz and the Blues are offered up for the taking within a short distance of each other.

Traveling into Boston on the later side you can miss the traffic and usually do not have an issue with parking at the commuter lots or in the city proper. Once you are in the city head into the North End for an early dinner (once again missing the crowds). After dinner swing by Mike’s Pastries and grab a take-out order of sweets.

With your bag of sweets in hand, head over to the music venues by way of the Harbor walk. If you cut down Hanover Street you will hit a great starting point for the Harbor Walk. Travel along the ins and outs of the pathway built on the water all the way to the Harbor Hotel. There you will find Blues on The Barge!

With the fabulous Harbor on one side and the Charles on the other, a floating stage houses the band. Visitors can either pony up to the steps (cushions provided) or have an amazing sit down dinner. We of course “pull up” a seat on the steps and open our box from Mike’s Pastries.

Once you have had your fill (literally and figuratively) of the great music (and sweet treats) at the Harbor Hotel,  hop back onto the Boston Harborwalk and make your way into the Seaport District – specifically the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Thursday nights the ICA has free concerts put on by students from The Berklee College of Music. As an added bonus the ICA has free admission! It is a win win.

As stated we have great luck with Thursday nights but any night of the week seems to have free concerts popping up in and around Boston.
