There is something so special about a winters hike. I know not all are so in love with the idea. It makes sense …cold temps, icy terrain. Let’s be real there are other activity options of a more cozy variety. However do not knock it until you try it and remember we do live in the land of winter breaks being built on the premise of skiing.
There is little to get up to speed on for a winter hike other than common
sense gear and precautions that you would have in place for any weather hike
(cell phone, mini first aid kit, etc…). All that is needed now is to pick the
destination. The hiking location will be dictated to you depending on the level
of hike you would like to do and who you will be hiking with. If you are hiking
with young children then an easy short (easy access in easy access out) hike
will work best. There are some amazing
web sites that can help you in your search and can filter location and level
desired.
When searching for a nice winter hike my fall back is always
Beaver Brook. Located in Hollis NH Beaver Brook has 35 miles of year round
well-maintained trails. The hikes are easy and well suited to a cold weather
excursion. The association offers snow shoe rentals and guided hikes. Winter
classes are additionally offered with such topics as “Love & Chocolate:
Herbs of the Heart” which explores the history and health benefits of chocolate.
I’m in!
Remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring
water and snacks. Hiking poles and a thermos of hot chocolate help tremendously
as well!
